I LOVED working on this episode, and Community is my favorite comedy on TV. I think this is some of the best professional work I’ve ever made.

Here’s a clip from the episode to Community I worked on! All the backgrounds in this clip are mine too! I can’t wait to share them once the episode has aired!

princecurry asked: Hey, I've been looking through your art things and I really like your work. I was wondering how you found your self working on cartoons for work. ...I guess to make this question make any sort of sense I was wondering how you broke into the cartoon industry? I would like to do character concepts for cartoons, story boards, and possibly animation so I would really love insider pointers/info if you can spare the time! c': thank you

Hello!

Well, I attended an art school in the midwest (Kansas City Art Institute). I really enjoyed it and learned/improved a ton, but I had to move to LA to break into the industry. I would suggest moving to the place with the jobs, for me it was animation so I choose LA. Apply for every internship you can and seek out other artists. Look up classes/drawing community’s, because that’s where professionals hang out. Make friends, network, work hard, and don’t be discouraged.

Here’s some more specific advice about networking and the LA animation industry:

1) Avoid saying you “do everything”, this may be true, but people in LA seem to take this as ” I don’t know how to do anything”. The case seems the be the opposite in NYC though…

2) mention specifically what you want to do to EVERYBODY you meet. Eventually someone will remember and contact you about it.

3) Be nice to everybody, BUT remain cool! Nobody wants to hire someone desperate!

4) SOCIALIZE! Go to public drawing events! Dr Sketchy’s, Drawing club, Sketch Crawl… Many friendly professionals hang out there and its a great way to meet new friends and make industry connections. If you hear of/ get invited to a party, GO. It’s important to become a familiar face. This is how I met the producer that eventually hired me at Titmouse.

5) DO NOT be discouraged by a test that did not land you the job! I failed my animation test at Titmouse and was called back for backgrounds! They knew my draftsmanship was good from my animation test. Something good still came out of it!

6) DO NOT burn bridges! There are some incredible ASSHOLES out here, deal with them gracefully and you will move on to better things…

7) …and on the flipside, people want to help you out! everyone wants to work with talented nice people.

8) Don’t view networking as something gross and calculated, these people will help you get jobs, but they will also become your dear friends! I’ve meet some of the kindest, coolest most fun and helpful people in the LA animation industry.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

Be sure to watch this episode of Community this Thursday…

BECAUSE I WAS ONE OF THE BACKGROUND ARTISTS ON IT.
